Dear Colleagues:
Like most public housing agencies in this country, Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC) has struggled in recent years to meet our community’ needs for quality affordable housing. About eight years ago, we decided to take control of our future and achieve the outcomes we had always dreamed of for our community.
Of course, like all dreams, saying that we are going to make a change and get a different result is one thing. Doing it is another. We had to decide where we wanted to go and how we were going to get there. We asked the question, “What do we have to do differently today to enable us to achieve our long term goals in the future?”
The answer was a performance-based leadership program which we introduced to KCDC in 2000. From one perspective, performance-based leadership is all about strategic planning and continuous improvement at your agency. From another perspective, and critical to long term success, performance-based leadership inspires great contributions from your most important resource, your employees.
Our performance-based leadership focused everybody’s energies on the key results we wanted while teaching all employees how to measure their progress toward those goals. We believe KCDC is a better public housing authority today in spite of reduced funding and regulatory changes from Washington. Our goals are set high and we consistently achieve them. As a result of our new found success, we are often asked to provide consulting services to other agencies that are struggling like we were before we adopted performance-based leadership.
As one of my colleagues in housing, I want to share with you an opportunity to learn about performance-based leadership. Tenmast Software, based in Lexington, Kentucky, is also a performance-based leadership company. They have developed a one-day seminar to teach you about performance-based leadership. The training is specifically designed for Public Housing Agencies and will show you how you can achieve the same high level of performance that we have, using the same resources you have today.
Thank you,
Art Cate
